Trochanteric Bursitis
Identifying the source of pain matters.
Symptoms and causes
The trochanteric bursa is a thin fluid layer beneath the iliotibial band and over the gluteal tendons that attach to the upper end of the femur.
Symptoms may include pain over the outer point of the hip, pain when lying on the affected side at night, and limitations with everyday activity.
Pain around the outside of the hip can have several contributors, so management starts with a focused assessment.

Treatment
There are several treatment options and the mainstay of treatment is non-operative. For cases that do not improve with appropriate non-operative treatment, surgery may be considered.
Discuss your symptoms and treatment options.
Preparation, procedure planning and rehabilitation are considered together and tailored to the individual.
Trochanteric Bursitis FAQs
Helpful starting points before your consultation. Advice and recovery plans are always tailored to the individual.
Is trochanteric bursitis the same as hip arthritis?
No. Trochanteric bursitis describes pain involving tissues on the outside of the hip, while hip arthritis affects the joint itself. Symptoms can overlap, so an assessment helps identify the likely pain source.
Why is the pain often worse when lying on my side?
Pressure over the outer hip can irritate sensitive tissues around the greater trochanter, making side-lying uncomfortable. Your clinician can assess whether this pattern fits your symptoms.
Will I need surgery?
Most cases are managed without surgery. Treatment is tailored to the cause and may include activity modification and a structured rehabilitation program. Surgery is generally reserved for persistent cases after appropriate non-operative care.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring your referral, Medicare details, relevant X-rays or scans, a current medication list and any useful reports from previous treatment or surgery. Contact the practice before your visit if you are unsure what is required.
