Hip Replacement
Hip replacement may be considered for advanced hip arthritis when non-operative treatment no longer provides adequate relief.
What hip replacement involves
Hip replacement involves replacing the acetabulum (the socket) and the femoral head (the ball). The operation aims to relieve pain and help restore mobility and quality of life.
Dr Fraser will explain the procedure, its potential risks and benefits, and the expected recovery with you as part of shared treatment planning.
Preparation, procedure planning and rehabilitation are considered together and tailored to the individual.
Replacement is one part of a wider care pathway.

Hip Replacement FAQs
Helpful starting points before your consultation. Advice and recovery plans are always tailored to the individual.
When might hip replacement be considered?
It may be considered when severe hip damage causes persistent pain or restricted mobility, affects everyday life and has not improved adequately with appropriate non-surgical treatment.
What is replaced during a total hip replacement?
The damaged femoral head, or ball, and the acetabulum, or socket, are replaced with prosthetic components. Dr Fraser will explain the proposed implants and surgical approach for your circumstances.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery varies with the procedure, your general health, mobility before surgery and rehabilitation. Dr Fraser and the treating team will provide an individual plan for hospital care, walking, physiotherapy, driving, work and other activities.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring your referral, Medicare details, relevant X-rays or scans, a current medication list and any useful reports from previous treatment or surgery. Contact the practice before your visit if you are unsure what is required.
